Hip-hop outfit Thundamentals have today announced a special touring art exhibition which will celebrate the launch of their upcoming album “Everyone We Know” which will be released on Friday February 10th (through High Depth/Universal Music Australia)TitledEveryone We Know: Exhibition Tour”, the ARIA nominated band have engaged Sydney artist and graphic designer April 77 Creative to create a conceptual exhibition inspired by each track from the new album.  Each song will be represented by a different character or person which will make up the works of the 16 piece graphic art collection.

We’ve worked with April77 since day one. He almost feels like a part of the band and has always understood our message and vision – going above and beyond every time. For this particular release, early on we knew we wanted a character to represent each of the songs on the album. It was an incredible experience going back and forth, refining each aspect of the front cover. And furthermore it’s a blessing to have him on board for the book. Ben actually designed 15 individual environments for each character and we are so happy with how everything came out – a perfect visual pallet for the entire record! – says Thundamentals MC Tuka.

April77 Creative aka Ben Funnell has been involved in the creative process of all the artwork for the groups previous album and EP releases and most notably the album Art Direction and Cover Design for their highly acclaimed “So We Can Remember” and “Everyone We Know” albums.

Speaking on the “Everyone We Know” artwork series, April77’s Ben Funnell says - “The theme for ’Everyone We Know’ is about people and ‘connectivity’ which we found really inspiring. We also felt a strong sense of diversity across each track on the LP in terms of subject matter and sonics. Our visual answer to this was to embrace and celebrate the diversity of Thundamentals fan base and friends – but rather than go with a literal representation of this broad demographic we aimed to really illuminate these differences by creating a series of hybrid human/alien/animal characters, all standing together. Each character was inspired by a different track on the LP. Some are more literal representations than others but there are many references to key lyrics and themes that stood out to us throughout. We hope that the artwork is enjoyed while listening to the album and the audience takes the time to uncover these references, as well as search for their own meaning and connection to the music and visual as a whole.”

The Everyone We Know: Exhibition Tour” will travel around to all capital cities starting in Melbourne on Monday Feb 6th at The Church of Bang Bang Boogaloo and finishing in Perth on Thursday Feb 16th (venue tbc). FREE for EVERYONE to enter, venue capacity will be capped so best to arrive early. While viewing each work, music and art lovers will be able to hear songs from the “Everyone We Know” album as well as purchase a limited edition bundle which includes a numbered high quality print of their favourite artwork and a copy of the new CD. Each night Thundamentals will be putting on an after party – DJing with a line-up of special guests.

“Everyone We Know: Exhibition Tour” will launch Thundamentals self-produced album “Everyone We Know” which features the singles Ignorance Is Bliss, Never Say Never and the crossover radio track Think About It feat. Peta & The Wolves.  Recorded at the studio of good friends Hermitude in Sydney’s inner suburbs, the 15 track release hits new heights not only for the band but for hip-hop in general and features a cast of friends including  guests Peta and the Wolves, Hilltop Hoods and Thundamentals previous collaborators Mataya and Laneous.

Thundamentals release ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ – Single, Clip & Tour!

Blues Mountains via Newtown hip hop trio Thundamentals continue to flip the concepts of what ‘Oz hip hop’ is supposed to be with new single ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ from their upcoming, as-yet-untitled, third album, proudly announcing their first and only headline tour for 2013 – taking in Sprung Festival and FBi’s 10th Birthday celebrations – to bring the new music to fans. Already added to rotation on triple j, debuting at #5 on the iTunes Hip Hop Charts, and an unashamed love letter, ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ would not have been an obvious single choice for the boys – MCs Tuka and Jeswon and DJ Morgs – a year ago.

Though Jeswon had remarked earlier last year that Thundamentals material is, “pretty eclectic, and very musical; a reflection of our willingness to experiment with different genres,” the huge response to a more sensitive Thundas on their triple j Like A Version of Matt Corby’s ‘Brother’ reminded them that the template of hip hop isn’t set in stone for them: as long as the music and meaning is there, a connection can be made. As Tuka points out, “I felt that it would be good to honour our new found sound and following before unveiling the rest of what is by far our most experimental record to date.”

Says Jeswon, “For me, ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ is a nostalgic, heartfelt song which celebrates many of the things I appreciate about the fairer sex, and my girlfriend in particular. I feel like the song really captures that daydream-like quality of yearning for a loved one when you aren’t in their presence. My motivation for writing this song is that it is a great opportunity to express my respect, admiration and love for my partner who has always been so supportive of my music. I can imagine her driving to work and hearing this song come on the radio and seeing a big smile break out across her face, knowing that she is the inspiration behind my lyrics. To be able to elicit an honest reaction of joy in the person I love the most as a result of something I have made would be an amazing feeling. I just want to make her, and hopefully the rest of Australia, feel good as a result of this song.”

It was following the response from their sophomore record Forevolution and, in particular, the enormously popular recording they made of ‘Brother’ that the band realised that their music was speaking to people outside the tried and successful Thunda’s paths.

‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ follows on from what has been a wildly successful few years for the Newtown trio. Moving backwards through the past twelve months, Thundamentals could commit to only one serious tour the aptly-titled ‘Get Busy’ tour between the scheduled writing and recording breaks set aside for the upcoming album.

Tuka had also been racing round in the wake of his second LP Feedback Loop, which saw him taking on a serious amount of solo shows, as well as support slots for everyone from Seth Sentry to Kendrick Lamar. Similarly, DJ Morgs and Ev Jones (‘Brother’ collaborator) have embarked on a side project called JONES Jnr whose soul drenched neo-gospel beats have attracted the attention of international blogs and seen them just announced to tour with – firstly – NZ Legends Fat Freddy’s Drop, followed by shows with soul troubadour Cody ChestnuTT.  This adds to a resume that boast shows with everyone from soul royalty Bettye Lavette to Blue Note singer Jose James, neo-soul hero Bilal and underground trendsetters Oddissee & Olivier Daysoul.

2011 saw the release of Thundamentals’ second album Foreverlution which saw their first inclusion in both the ARIA and AIR Charts [debuting at #19 on ARIA Australian Charts, #17 on ARIA Urban Charts and #3 on the AIR Charts], not to mention the first two singles [‘Paint The Town Red’ and ‘How You Been?’] sliding into rotation on triple j.

Sleeping On Your Style [2009] had previously produced singles that leapt onto high rotation on the J’s [‘Move It Up’ and ‘The Mash’] with the release proper garnishing the band spots on 2010’s Rolling Stone Magazine’s ‘Acts To Watch’ list and Sydney Morning Heralds ‘Next Big Things’ list and fourth single  T.H.U.N.D.A achieving MTV Rotation.

With a touring history includes A Tribe Called Quest, Big Boi (Outkast), MF Doom, Lyrics Born, Drapht, Bone Thugs N Harmony Thundamentals have grown into one of Australia’s most accomplished and energetic live acts, raising roofs and causing hangovers wherever they go, but as well invoking thoughtfulness and delivering new sounds to a genre scene that is seriously, and finally, beginning to spread its wings in this country. The last tour sold out fast…you know what to do.

FOREVERLUTION ALBUM TOUR!

As their new album Foreverlution was hitting the shelves 6 weeks ago Thundamentals were prepping for a national run of dates with Big Boi; and before the dust could settle from that trip they’d already struck out again on a 6 week long, 15 date engagement with Drapht. The long and short of all this is that though it’s just over a month and a half since their album release, only now are the band announcing their own ‘Foreverlution Album Launch Tour’.

In stores the last week of July through Obese Records, Foreverlution hit with a bang. Debuting nationally at #3 on the Air Charts, #17 on ARIA Urban Charts and #19 on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Album Charts, the response from media and public alike was unanimous. Lead single from the album ‘Paint The Town Red’ was immediately added to triple J rotation (top 20 most played track on triple J – week of release) and was the 9th most downloaded track on Australian radio through AIR IT (week of release). FBI made the album their ‘Feature Album of The Week’ (week prior to release), and on it went.
